Japan's Wrapping Cloth Started in the Bath #Furoshiki #Japan #JapaneseCulture #japanlife #eco
In the Muromachi period, feudal lords bathed at the shogun's bathhouse.
They wrapped their robes in cloth marked with their family crest, so nothing would be mixed up.
After bathing, they changed clothes on top of that same cloth.
"A cloth spread in the bath" — that is where the name comes from.
Over time, its uses expanded.
Carrying goods. Wrapping products. Kept under futons, ready to bundle belongings and flee a fire.
For 400 years, it was part of everyday Japanese life.
Plastic bags nearly replaced it.
Today, it is gaining attention worldwide as an eco-friendly alternative.
A bath cloth is now wrapping the world.
