Will the food here blow your mind? No. But it's tasty, it's affordable, it's where the students, delivery drivers and local tradies go, and if I've learnt one thing over my years of shamelessly overeating, there may be no better feeling than getting served a heaped plate of food by an aunty. Ben's Takeaway has been around for 25+ years, about 15 minutes walk down the road from UNSW where I went to school. I never knew about it because it was sort of hidden around the corner off the main street. I had never walked past! I'm glad I got the chance to try them now though. The favourite order here is #101, the Thai-style rice with crispy chicken (gai tod) but make it fried rice - $16.50. I think the fried rice is the star of the show. It's delicious, and it's fun to watch aunty working the wok. My favourite Thai fried chicken near uni remains at Time for Thai, and sure I've had better pad kee mao in Sydney's Haymarket Thaitown, but you won't find Ben's Takeaway's timeless charm at either of those places. Don't look down at old places like this with run-down signage and outdated interiors. There's a reason they're still around!
