Chinese mathematicians Deng Yu, Wang Hong make history as first China citizens to win Fields Medal
Chinese mathematicians Wang Hong and Deng Yu have won the Fields Medal, making history as the first citizens from China to claim the world's most prestigious mathematics prize. The award, often described as the "Nobel Prize of mathematics", is handed out only once every four years to researchers under the age of 40.
The announcement was made on Thursday at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Philadelphia.
Both medalists completed their undergraduate degrees at the same school, Peking University, having enrolled in the exact same year, 2007.
Wang Hong, 35, a NYU professor,won the award for solving the 100-year-old Kakeya conjecture regarding the minimum space needed to fully rotate a needle. French President Emmanuel Macron personally called Wang, who earned two dual degrees in France, to congratulate her on her win.
Professor Deng Yu, 37, who now teaches at the University of Chicago, was recognized for his work explaining how fluids move and interact at a microscopic level.
The two Chinese scholars shared this year's award with John Pardon from the US and Jacob Tsimerman from Canada.
