JIAOHUN Reveal Trailer: 90s Chinese Survival Horror | Out in 2027
"Return to a Chinese town on the eve of the millennium..."
JIAOHUN" is a cinematic narrative first-person psychological horror game developed by Shanghai-based studio 12AM BLACKOUT and built on Unreal Engine 5. "JIAOHUN" originates from the traditional Chinese folk ritual of calling back the soul of a person whose spirit has been frightened away. The story takes place in a small Chinese town on the eve of the new millennium in 1999 — Xiannü Town, Baishui County.
The player takes on the role of a returnee who has lost their soul, gradually uncovering the mystery of the town's end while searching for their soul. Four interwoven stories unfold around the theme of "obsession": when the era casts aside both people and their desires, obsession turns into an inner demon that devours the town's residents.
The game focuses on a narrative-driven experience, deeply researching the social landscape, folk rituals, and era memories of China around the turn of the millennium, and is dedicated to exploring the cultural context and aesthetic style unique to Chinese horror, emphasizing atmosphere building, cultural metaphor, and psychological pressure.
