Shanghai's new opera house to launch tests ahead of grand opening
Poised as a new Asian opera landmark, the Shanghai Grand Opera House on the Huangpu River near Expo Culture Park will run a month‑long stress test from August 15 ahead of its grand opening.
Around ten performances, mainly staged by local Shanghai art troupes, will be held during the period.
Reviews and adjustments will be made after each show to conduct thorough inspections ranging from stage functions to audience circulation routes.
The opera house will invite the first batch of informal audiences to take part in the assessments.
Constructed over six years, Shanghai Grand Opera House was completed in June this year.
The complex has three venues: the 2,000‑seat Harmony Hall for opera, dance, symphony, and large‑scale shows; the 1,200‑seat Soar Theatre for drama, Peking Opera, and Kunqu; and the 1,000‑seat Open Stage for immersive theatre, chamber music, and intimate performances.
It will officially open to the public on October 17 and launch a four-month opening performance season.
Boasting its distinctive Chinese Fan inspired design, the Shanghai Grand Opera House has already become one of Shanghai's newest architectural landmarks.
