In Korean culture, the lotus has long symbolized fulfilled wishes, prosperity, and inner peace. In Mongwoo Joseph Kim's paintings, lotus flowers, ducks, and quiet ponds often represent a peaceful heart rather than simply a beautiful landscape.
This work was born from one of the most difficult periods of the artist's life. At that time, he was still unknown. Financial hardship, anxiety about his family, poor health, loneliness, and uncertainty weighed heavily on him. Eventually, he reached a point where there seemed to be no solution. With only enough money to buy a single tube of paint, he spent his last savings at an art store and walked aimlessly for an entire day.
That journey brought him to a frozen lake in the middle of winter. The lotus flowers had withered, the reeds were dry, and everything appeared quiet and lifeless. Yet something unexpected happened. Looking at the faded lotus, he suddenly realized it was still beautiful. Even after blooming, fading, and drying, it had never lost its dignity.
In that moment, the artist understood that nature never resists change. Flowers bloom when their time comes, fade when the season ends, and quietly prepare for new life. Only people cling to yesterday and fear tomorrow.
That realization transformed both his heart and his art. His paintings gradually became brighter, calmer, and filled with hope. People began to recognize the warmth within his work, and little by little, his life also changed.
