Lt. Col. Charity Adams Earley was the highest-ranking Black woman officer during WWII.
She commanded the only all-Black Women's Army Corps battalion sent to Europe — the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion in Birmingham,
England and France. When a general visited and threatened to send a white officer to replace her if her unit didn't improve,
Adams reportedly looked him in the eye and said: "Sir, there is no white officer in the Army who can do the job better than I can."
The general left. Adams stayed. Her battalion processed 17 million pieces of backed-up mail — some of it two years old — clearing the backlog in half the projected time.
They did it in three shifts, around the clock, in unheated warehouses, in the dark. She told him to go ahead. He didn't.
