'Stop Acting Like Puppets': Traore Heads to Putin as Russia Courts Burkina Faso | Firstpost Africa

Watch this Firstpost report as we examine Ibrahim Traore’s decisive move to shift Burkina Faso's geopolitical alignment away from traditional Western partnerships and towards Vladimir Putin’s Russia. Burkina Faso's Interim President is set to attend the third Russia-Africa Summit later this month, marking his third high-profile visit to the Russian Federation in just over two years. Traore, who delivered a powerful critique of neo-colonial dependency at the 2023 summit, calling on African heads of state to "stop acting like puppets," is now solidifying a strategy of self-reliance backed by reliable allies. The widening partnership spans critical sectors beyond security, where Putin has reaffirmed Russian assistance in countering terrorism and extremism in the Sahel. Russia is now actively supporting Burkina Faso’s self-sufficiency in food through grain shipments, in healthcare via the transfer of advanced mobile disease-control laboratories, and in education by doubling scholarships for Burkinabe students. Critically, discussions are underway for civil nuclear cooperation, fulfilling Traore's unwavering vision that a strong nation must master science and technical expertise to develop and protect its sovereignty. Traore's message is unequivocal: Africa is taking control of its own destiny. Alyson Le Grange brings you the details on Firstpost Africa.
