Today I'd like to introduce Roses Blooming in a Moon Jar, a monumental work painted in 2017 by Korean artist Seong Harim.
At first glance, the painting feels warm and comforting, much like the rich aroma of traditional Korean fermented sauces that deepen with time or the nostalgic memories of one's hometown. Seong Harim captures that same warmth on a grand canvas, blending Korea's timeless moon jar with elegant roses in a way that feels both classical and surprisingly modern.
For the artist, this is not merely a still life. Every object carries meaning. The moon jar represents the loving heart of Korean mothers and grandmothers—the vessel that held food for the family and stood beside the jars where heartfelt prayers were offered every dawn. The blooming roses symbolize those prayers finally coming to life, transforming hope into joy and abundance.
Beside the moon jar rest three pomegranates. In Korean symbolism, the number three represents harmony between Heaven, Earth, and Humanity. Because the flowers and fruit are placed inside a home, the artist suggests that nature's blessings ultimately become the happiness of one's own family.
Seong Harim began painting flowers blooming from moon jars as early as the 1980s. At that time, combining Korea's traditional moon jar with Western-style roses was considered highly unconventional. Yet she continued developing this unique artistic language, eventually inspiring many younger artists.
