Murderbot Explores What It Means to Be Human
If you’re looking for a fast, fun, emotionally surprising sci-fi series, Martha Wells’ Murderbot Diaries delivers in every way. I read the first novella a while back for my podcast The Middle of Culture and loved it — and now that I’ve finally returned to the series, I’ve burned through books 2, 3, 4, and am deep into book 5.
Murderbot is one of the most compelling modern sci-fi protagonists: a sarcastic, introverted, hyper-capable SecUnit who just wants to be left alone to watch its shows… while also inadvertently exploring what it means to be human. It sits in the same tradition as characters like Data from Star Trek, using an artificial lifeform to ask big questions about identity, purpose, and belonging.
If you haven’t started Murderbot yet, do it — the books are quick, engaging, and genuinely funny. And the Apple TV adaptation is fantastic too.
