The French Farmer Who Paid the Ultimate Price for Freedom

British paratrooper Douglas Baines was part of the British Parachute Regiment and was dropped in the wrong landing area on D-Day, landing in a boggy dried-out riverbed. A local French farmer came to his rescue — helping Baines and his comrades escape. The farmer was later captured by the Nazis and shot for helping the British. Baines himself was eventually captured. He escaped. He joined the French Resistance. The farmer who saved him never got to see the liberation. The man he helped escaped. The man who helped him was executed for it. That exchange — one life saved, one taken for the saving — is not in most D-Day histories. It happened on D-Day. It happened because a farmer made a choice about what he was going to do when British soldiers landed in his field.
