Meat Pie Sounds Like A Mistake🍽 Welly Exit List EP. 7/8
Where I'm from, pie means dessert. A pie with an entire braised stew sealed inside it - eaten by hand, from a paper bag - made no sense to me for years.
Then I tried a bad one. Then a mediocre one. Then I stopped trying.
@pukupiess Puku is the one that made me start again.
The pastry is properly flaky - holds together, doesn't crumble, never goes soggy. The filling is dense, no filler, no shortcuts on the cheese. It tastes like someone actually made a decision about what went inside.
I had:
🥩 Jalapeño Beef Brisket - slow-cooked brisket, a good hit of heat, melted cheese throughout. My favourite on their regular menu. The kind of pie you think about on the way home.
🍺 Mince & Double Beer Cheese (pie of the month) - richer, maltier, the cheese does something different here. I could easily devour one myself.
🥩Pepper Wagyu Cheek - packed with tasty meat and super peppery. I personally prefer a pie with cheese, but still enjoyed one without, for the pastry and meat.
If you've never had a New Zealand pie, start here. If you think you don't like meat pies, also start here.
I'm leaving Wellington to Osaka in July, and I already know I'll be having my monthly craving of Puku pies wherever I go.
