After World War II ended,
Black soldiers returned home facing violent white mobs who resented African Americans in uniform and perceived them as a threat to the social order of Jim Crow.
At least a dozen Black veterans were killed or attacked, some while still wearing their military uniforms. They had crossed oceans. They had survived combat.
They had earned their uniform. They came home wearing it — and were attacked for wearing it. The uniform was the threat.
